Oh My Goodness! Where do I even start... The parking lot is small but people come and go fast so you won't be waiting long for a parking spot. If you aren't able to find parking in there, there is always parking on the street. When you walk in the place is huge and they sell everything! They have grab and go (ready made) meals such as Sandwiches, salads, wraps, pizza and so much more! Today my friend and I got a Christopher Columbus (cold sandwich) and the New Yorker (Hot Sandwich). Both were absolutely delicious! They weren't too heavy or greasy. They hit the spot. The service was great! Everyone there is nice and extremely helpful. I honestly can't wait to come back and try a different sandwich or even a different item off their menu.
Delicious sandwiches at great prices. Reuben and Philly are my favorites. You can pick up drinks and chips and snacks and eat at balboa park. Great for quick picnic
I am not being hyperbolic when I say that The Marketplace is my favorite spot! From the grab and go meals, salads, sandwiches, and pizza -- I have never had a bad meal. My current obsession is the chicken caprese sandwich. Another fave is the Christopher Columbus on Dutch crunch bread. Protip: the deli is very busy during the lunch hour. I recommend placing your order online (link on their website) so you can grab your food without the wait. You can also call to place your order. Whenever friends or colleagues find out that I live in Bankers Hill, they mention the sandwiches from Marketplace! I'm so spoiled haha This place has everything and the staff are all super friendly. I've been going here for five years and am on a first name basis with many employees. Want to experience it yourself? Know that this is a grab and go without dining onsite.
This is a perfect spot for a quick bite. 7/26/2024. Crab melt ($12.49): generous of crab with richness from the mayo mix, and the buttered sourdough. This is a deal for seafood, 4/5 stars! Chorizo pizza slice ($3.39): the flavors were subtle but decent overall, 3/5 stars. Pepperoni pizza slice ($3.39): tasted like a French bread pizza and they were generous with the cheese, 3.5/5 stars. The pizza fell short from my expectations, but I'm glad that they serve a delicious crab melt that won't break the bank!
The Marketplace in Bankers Hill is the absolute best Their sandwiches and wraps are hands down some of the best I've had in San Diego. The ingredients are always fresh, the flavors are perfectly balanced, and you can tell everything is made with care. Whether it's the classic turkey avocado or a bold specialty wrap, every bite is amazing. What makes this place even more special is David. He's the kind of owner who truly loves what he does, and it shows. He's always so friendly and welcoming, greeting regulars by name and making everyone feel like part of the family. It's rare to find a spot that combines incredible food with such a warm, personal touch.
If I ever move away, I know that sandwiches from The Marketplace will be something I'll miss and will try to pick up if I'm ever in the area. I'm here all the time. The sandwiches and the grab-and-go meals (salads and bowls) are so good and so, so affordable. I swear, it's cheaper than groceries these days. You can order online (I order so often, I downloaded their app) and pick up from a shelf by the register, so it's super easy and efficient for me as a busy mom. My little kid loves their cheese pizza, so the whole family can eat what they want and I'm in and out of there so quickly! I highly recommend ordering online so you can customize your sandwiches exactly how you imagine without staring at the options in the deli and dictating to the deli workers. It can get quite busy in there! Aside from the deli food, there are so many drinks in the fridge, liquor selection, a massive snack and candy selection, and some regular groceries too. It's an essential part of the neighborhood. There is a small private lot or fairly easy street parking. They accept credit cards and Apple Pay.
One of my favorite places in SD to get sandwiches & salads from. It's great for lunch or even picking up food before a picnic at balboa. The balsamic chicken salad is one of my favorite salads ever! I have it at least 1x a week. They also have plenty of other ready made salads to choose from! Another one of my favorites is their Asian chicken salad. Prices & food here are a 10/10
I've passed this place a thousand times and never stopped in. For shame. It's a market, with a much better than average selection of chips, soft drinks, etc. and they also have a very nice deli with super fresh sandwiches. The sandwich prices are also very reasonable. We tried the Beefeater (roast beef, corned beef, pastrami, and Swiss cheese, and various veggies and condiments). I upgraded to a roll which, in my opinion, is the smart move. The sandwich was very fresh but I think it doesn't allow any particular meat to shine. It's not their fault but I would probably order a different sandwich next time. We also tried the Californian (turkey, bacon, avocado, jack cheese, and sprouts) and this one was a clear winner. The combination of flavors was very good. Finally, we tried the Christopher Columbus (turkey, avocado, and Swiss cheese) and it's a safe but solid choice. The sandwiches were all ready in about ten minutes which isn't bad at all. The deli workers were all very busy with walk-up and takeout orders. These are very good sandwiches with fresh ingredients at good prices. Next time, I would very much like to try one of their hot sandwiches. They sound terrific. Solid spot!
